Excuse me, princess…

So I’ve been stuck with watching Code Geass since yesterday morning. After the first episode I was totally convinced that this was Gundam + Death Note, and while I’m struck aghast by how much awesome is concentrated in every episode, I also regret not watching this during its run. Not that you’ll find me complaining though — Shinsen Subs are on top of their league as usual with impeccable translations and quality raws, so it’s not like I missed out on a lot.

On a more unpleasant note, there’s exactly two weeks to my first A-Levels paper (Thinking Skills), and I thought I’d take this time to type out an announcement for it. Expect updates to drop to something like once every two, three days. Four if I can’t finish revising the damn text on time.

I didn’t see anything of the sort on /a/, so am I the only one to wonder if C.C’s actually going to claim Lelouch’s soul at the end? I mean, her “we’re promised to each other” is awfully vague, and she could do a Jigoku Shoujo for all we know.

The downside of marathoning a series like Code Geass would be the cliffhangers. Each and every time an episode ends the only thing I want to do is sleep, yet my lack of self-control and the brilliantly-paced plot conspire to keep me awake. Been rationing myself to seven episodes a day, which leaves me with another four for today. Great, just great.

Current backlog in order I should be watching:

  1. Higurashi (14-26)
  2. Asatte no Houkou
  3. Emma
  4. Mushishi

yet I don’t know whether I can steel myself to watch Higurashi all alone at night. See, the thing is I like watching my anime in complete darkness and silence. At night especially, where the whole experience resembles a cinema. The lights are dimmed save for a small energy-saving light somewhere near the staircase, and usually no one’s awake.

This might seem eccentric to most of you, but since my PC isn’t in the room I don’t like watching anything when the rest of my family members are awake. In a house with two parents and two siblings the setting isn’t exactly conducive — peripheral noise abounds, and the place isn’t exactly large to boot.

How did I get through the first half of Higurashi? Oh, that’s right, I watched the first few episodes in the afternoon. Not only did it convince me that this was something you couldn’t watch alone at night, it also made me give up my habit of watching an anime episode and having lunch at the same time.

Maybe I’ll alternate watching Higurashi episodes with Asatte no Houkou episodes or something. Alternate relief/horror shocks would be good — or would Higurashi then Emma be better, with romance right after murder? Recommend me something to keep the creeps at bay, I was already frightened enough watching it in the afternoon in bright daylight, and I don’t know if I can handle it at 1 in the A.M.

I still crack up every time “Orange” is mentioned during the show, and can’t wait for Mao to make his appearance. Neither can I get over how everything looks way too familiar for comfort — Clamp’s usually unique character designs are showing signs of strain here seeing how Suzaku and that lady boss of his belong back in Gundam Seed (also, Euphie = Lacus like everyone said). The mechs look like neater, faster, Guymelefs. Orange himself looks like Kazuma, but I suppose KyoAni’s not the only studio who can reference their own anime.

Episode eleven awaits, along with apple crumble and vanilla ice-cream.

Glad to see you’ve liked Code Geass. Most of the time it’s a pretty enjoyable series.

FWIW, Shinsen Subs had some problematic translations until Episode 7 (Clovis being “at peace” on a beach, for one of the most notable examples of WTF), when they were doing the series in collaboration with someone else, but apparently they did get over that when they caught up with the rest of the series (except for a couple of stylistic bits, but they’re tolerable).

What scares you about Higurashi? The frighteningly creepy plot, or the frighteningly bad animation XD! All joking aside, a mixture of Higurashi and Emma works well. Go from mid-eighties Japanese horror story to romance in Victorian England. And the second season just started, so if you like Emma you can watch that soon.

The thing about the character designs in Code Geass, which I like to remind everyone about, is that the original designs are by Clamp. The actual character designer for the show is Takahiro Kimura, known for his many busty and curvy ladies (Godannar, GunXSword, Gaogaigar, Betterman). So you got the skinny and flat designs of Clamp mixing with the sexy style of Kimura. It’s why all the girls look odd, yet hot at the same time. Except Nina, because she’s crazy.

I just hate her so much, and I don’t know why.

Code Geass is quite nice, mixes a lot of series together and still has its own uniqe feeling.

Higurashi, I watched it alone, in a dark room before going to sleep. It was a real killer if you know what I mean =)

I have to watch the second season as well of Higurashi.

XXX: I don’t recall that part, but I’ve come to the conclusion that ureshii isn’t that great after doing a comparison of sola. Not so much the accuracy in translation per se (with my limited knowledge of Japanese I wouldn’t really know) but the natural translation, and proper romanization of names, army ranks, stuff like that.

Demian: They all look like Barbie dolls if you ask me. The ED stills would be from Clamp is my guess? And yeah, I did plan on getting Emma thanks to the second season.

Alk: I saw that scene, it was rather… veiled though. TABLE FUCK TABLE FUCK IT’S AWWWRIGHT.

For the record, I hate the new OP/ED. But Mao was awesome, it was like seeing an ex-lover psycho stalker of C.C coming back to haunt her. And Lelouch got totally owned.

Nope, Kimura did the ending animation, too. It really is an overstatement to say Clamp really had any involvement with Code Geass. Lelouch makes A LOT of stupid mistakes, but that’s what makes him fun to watch, because even if he’s trying to conquer the world he’s still human.

Phew, 23 episodes in 3 days. Will be making a long post about it within the week. And now I can’t wait for 24 and 25 to air. ): When’s summer begin in Japan, again?
