The backlogged week of Spring that was

I forgot to comment on Claymore 06’s shounen character development (those two terms in the same sentence, wow), when it aired, so here’s a little something to make up for it. No, that wasn’t taken out of context at all, I don’t know what you’re talking about, really.

this-isnt-taken-out-of-context.jpg
years after Claymore is dead and buried under the avalanche of new anime this picture will persist, and someone will get the idea that it was about kinky exhibitionist lesbian paedophile knights during medieval times, and find out they were only half-wrong.

Claymore 07
They’re taking over 9000 to ridiculous levels. So let me get this straight; a Yoma is immensely powerful, way more than any human. A Claymore is even more powerful, way beyond what a Yoma can achieve unless it’s a Claymore-turned-Yoma, which is about an equal fight. Then, if that wasn’t annoying enough, we’ve got Claymore rankings in the vein of power levels and bankais, and the power difference between the top 5 is ridiculous.

I’m not going to talk about the Freudian imagery that can be derived from watching Claymore, lest lolikit read this and get aroused again like he did here, but let’s just say that there was tons in this episode. Females, with big swords, fighting for dominance. While that sinks in, let’s not forget that Teresa is #1, and that #2-#5 are after her, which makes this impending gangbang battle something that I’m highly anticipating.

Sisters of Wellber 02
I don’t know what’s so special about this, because it isn’t. Maybe it’s how I appreciate something that doesn’t take itself seriously when it shouldn’t. The whole feel of the show still seems like an RPG to me, only instead of last episode’s “Princess Rita joined your party!” this week we’ve got the obligatory town jaunt. Then there’s the whole Riviera thing, if you’ve played the game, remember how at the beginning and end of each chapter there would be this summary story thing as it loaded? Same thing here, only it’s at the end of every episode.

The tank isn’t annoying. No, there wasn’t any nudity this time around. Yes, that beru fairy thing isn’t as bad as desu was. You could say there wasn’t any development in this episode story-wise except for events that made the princess into a commoner good and proper, but it could be worse. The music still fits the episode like lime-green pants fit a psychedelic-orange shirt, which is to say, it doesn’t, but there’s something extremely soothing about the dissonance.

I also hate Live-evil for doing a half-arsed job with the karaoke — there’s none. Oi, even Triad obliged with non-animated karaoke after their infamous rant, but you guys take twice as long, there isn’t an OP to do, andthe least you guys could do would be to give us something for the ED so we know what the song’s about! It isn’t terribly important, but its absence is like a gaping hallway the size of… I’m just sayin’.

Gigantic Formula 06
Shingo coming to terms about his feelings for Mana aside, this wasn’t as epic, but that could be due to the lack of a mech battle. Oh wait, there was, but it involved two Greek men and their mech fighting Egypt’s, and that one was a no-contest because Greece had the power of manly rivalry on their side.

Speaking of which. I thought the episode was pretty GAR, in terms of the two aforementioned manly men from Greece beating the shit out of each other whenever they could. Over a woman, who also happens to be the one in charge of their mech. Is it wrong to get excited over two brawnydudes getting physical when it’s for the right reasons? I hope not.

Toward the Terra 04
The “you mustn’t run away” episode. Yes, it’s pretty obvious that a lot of interaction between Soldier Blue and Jomy’s there for the fangirls to drool over. I get the creeps every time Blue gets up close and personal, which, when taking into account the past three hours, is like two to three times an episode. What’s worse is how they’re lacking in gar and try to make up for it in vain with their silly psychic powers.

I think I read in my feedreader something about there being a timeskip a few episodes after this? While I’m not sure how I feel about timeskips since I’ve yet to see how it’s implemented, Toward the Terra has been quite good so far. The production values are still top-notch. The music is excellent. The story shows no sign of following well-worn territory, at least not yet. If you’re not watching it yet, Terra Subs is doing a good job, even if they’re behind somewhat.

Lucky Star 06
Opinions, opinions, opinions. You are different and unique when you say something that a few hundred people have already said, only differently, since it’s cool to be moronic about your opinion and all, like I’m doing. This is what I think of those who are watching it all because the directors changed.

Protip: The humour’s the same. Maybe better pacing like jaalin said (personally, I couldn’t tell the difference), but it’s the same thing. Same difference, if you may. But I’m sure no one’s watching Lucky Star anyway, at least those with awful taste, because that brings me on to the next thing I saw, which is…

sola 06
I like this as much as I like thinking up metaphors to insert into my writing, which is to say that I like it not because it’s really nice, but because I like to provide people with amusement and it contributes to my feeling better about myself. As I’m about to do right now, because I still hate it, and it sucks.

Reincarnation, hmm, sounds familiar; wasn’t that the tripe that was Air? I started on sola just because it looked promising, but it looks at this point like I’m going to watch this out of spite just to rail at it and laugh at the awful ending it looks like its setting up, like the thousand or so haters who watch Lucky Star just to say “it’s STILL NOT funny!” and post about it on the internet. Only this time I’m posting about something that’s actually awful, whereas Lucky Star is actually good (and everyone’s tsundere for it).

Darker than Black 06
It’s still blowing, and by blowing I mean blowing the competition out of the water. Over the week I happened across this rather ghastly opinion about it. Darker than Black was always good, but this person said something about it finally getting better, then said another unforgivably dumb thing about the other series I like, which is still taking forever to be subbed. Also, here’s my theory about Hei’s contract:

I think it’s damn obvious.

Three things:
1. He can perform it in advance and store it, a pseudo-Moratorium state.
2. He doesn’t have to perform the obeisance immediately after.
3. His contract is significant physical contact with females.

Now, think about it for a second. We’ve seen Chiaki, and Mai, haven’t we? Hei was practically touching Chiaki for the most part — kissing and carrying her, for instance. Then we had Mai, who, well — he held her hand quite a number of times. Now with DtB 06 it’s practically confirmed. We’ve had him come onto Carmine throughout the episode in various ways (even breaking her fingers), and she even touched the side of his face before she died.

Then we’ve got Yin, who… takes his hand at the end of the episode. She’s never done that before, so what else could it be? Hei’s pulling away would be a “NOT NOW, BITCH, I’M EMO” thing, which also means he’s used to Yin touching him after battles, he just wasn’t in the mood for it. It’s all cool though, makes everything more obvious, like how he works his way into the hearts of the girls he meets, not because he likes it, but because he has to in order to get all touchy-feely.

For the record, there’s a few scenes with Mai and Carmine where the camera pans in on Hei as he holds their hands. So there. I’m hoping for a Mai reappearance during the next November 11 vs Hei showdown, since not only is her obeisance the best thing ever, Fire vs Ice would be great to behold, and yes, I know the date’s an ironic reference since it’s when Britain remembers the end of WWII.

Touhou 10 took my eyes and rubbed habanero sauce in them. Kanon Violin by Tamusic stole my ears and refused to give them back. Between the both, I’m glad to note that Sunday’s been quite the eventful day, and I need to get a review of the Touhou 10 demo up ASAP.

    Owen you stole my joke.
    You heartless bastard.

Also I claim full rights to “first person to flame the shit out of Lucky Star.”
I don’t think anyone’s done it as extremely as I have either.
    And my hatred perseveres.

You’ve seen nothing yet on Claymore. The power levels shown later are insane; think more like over 9000000000.

Darker than Black continues to rock and rock hard in my book. The two-episode long story arcs are still a bit of annoyance, mind, because it seems to move on from each situation too quickly. Apart from that minor criticism it’s my fave show of the season with Bokurano taking a close second. You’re definitely right about Hei being no ordinary Contractor though – he seem to have a stronger human aspect, as if he’s halfway between the two (if that’s possible?). I’ve yet to figure out the details of how Contractors are ‘created’ and operate: I had a suspicion that Hei’s contract is to pig out on food afterwards but I’m still not sure.

I wish I’d had time to sit down and watch Claymore though. Maybe if I end up dropping one of the other series I’m following this season…
