In defense of Kodomo no Jikan, otherwise known as “Nymphet”
Posted by: Owen S in Manga, tags: Comedy, Commentary, High school, Kodomo no JikanMy first ever Manga post is about lolicon. Awesome.
This is in response to a recent Mr Answerman column (scroll down) where Zac Bertschy, the writer, basically goes off on a tangent about Kodomo no Jikan because of the presumably pseudo-paedophile vibes the manga gives off which his perfectly normal, non-fetishist heterosexual nature can’t endorse. Nevermind how the manga isn’t even released yet.
It so happens I’ve got volumes 1-3 raw, and having read them before I’d seen the column, not to mention how Google actually fails for once at providing proper information in English about it, this would be a great opportunity to explain what KnJ’s really all about. Some spoilers after the cut.
I’ve got issues about Bertschy’s opinion due to how he hasn’t even read it, and therefore can’t justify what he said. Unless, I don’t know, he went into the future, got a copy of Nymphet, and realised it wasn’t his thing. That would be nothing if he was just your everyday blogger, but this guy runs a columnist on ANN, and as a result you’ve got an huge audience whose perception of the manga, and anime come Summer, has the potential to be biased.
Shockingly enough, KnJ isn’t about the sex, because there’s none. Neither is it “the first lolicon title that’s explicit enough”, because there’s no full-frontal nudity, and hardly any borderline “my hair is covering the important parts” nudity — just good old-fashioned pantyshots. Of a nine year-old, to be sure, but pantyshots nonetheless.

you’re looking at the longest twin-tails on a character ever, those things reach down to her feet, and yes, this is an accurate portrayal of their relationship actually.
For what it’s worth, KnJ would be better described as an exercise in grounding a series in its fetish-pandering roots. I’m sure you’ve heard of howscientists areaspiring to create a self-aware, sentient AI someday? Kaworu Watashiya’s just gotten the ball rolling with the self-aware manga.
It’s a pretty unique situation we’ve got here because KnJ isn’t shy to let you know about its lolicon aspirations. The first few pages of the first volume has the teacher, Daisuke Aoki, walking in on his new class just as the girls are changing post-P.E. There’s your first pantyshot without warning on the third page for you, and the frequency by which you’ll see them later sets it apart from practically any lolicon series you might have seen before.
The thing about KnJ’s that while it’s clearly one of those series that’s stuck between the trinity genres of slice of life/high school (or in this case, grade school)/comedy, the lolicon aspect permeates it unabashedly in no way any other manga or anime I can recall has done; it’s a far cry from Card Captor Sakura’s all-fetish offering, Rizelmine’s rom-com setting, or Nanoha’s now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t teasing. When KnJ isn’t advancing the plot or developing its characters, it’s pandering to the lolicons, and it even manages both when occasion permits.
So on one hand you’ll have scenes like Rin talking to Mimi and Kuro about the colour of panties that she’s wearing today, before turning to Daisuke to reveal she’s wearing gym shorts under her dress; Rin doing a reverse sexual harassment by groping Daisuke on the train; and last but not least a 20-something single guy who’s Rin’s guardian.
On the other hand, you have Rin herself, a character very well-rounded in terms of character development. There isn’t really much going for her friends, the tsundere brunette Kuro Kagami and the oppai meganekko Mimi Usuke, just yet, but she definitely gets sufficient characterisation as a nine year-old whose surreal behaviour actually manages to be justified, as weird as it sounds.
Through the course of thethree volumes so farRin’sbackstory’s being revealed bit by bit,and you get more indication as to her past, why she acts the way she does, at the same time humanising her in a way not many manga or anime series nowadays are prone to do. It’s refreshing to say the least for something of this subject matter to handled in a manner that doesn’t judge the viewer the way a series usually would, and it shows.
While KnJ seemed like GTO territory to me initially, the story takes on a more focused, slightly darker Ichigo Mashimaro approach in the later volumes, interspersed with a lot of Love Hina type gags. There’s an vague sense of a plot that the story’s working to since, you know, it’s all about Daisuke and Rin, and yes, they do kiss somewhere along the line.
But since Daisuke’s the grade school teacher with a heart of gold, and Rin’s being all pushy about it in addition to being his student, it makes for an interesting relationship in denial unlike anything seen before. It’s a great contrast to Negima’s interaction with Asuna, because in Negima’s case all the gratuitous nudity and fanservice diffuses any sexual tension that isn’t immediately obvious; also, instead of rushing all over the place and distracting the reader with unnecessarily long story arcs and 8 million characters, KnJ actually has some kind of conceivable direction that it’s heading to.
So give KnJ a chance when it comes out, and by all means, ignore Bertschy. I think it’s doing a great job with regards to pushing the boundaries of what’s currently acceptable while still retaining an acceptable degree of good taste, and pulling off a decent story at the same time.

this infamous “please come inside me” scene needs context; in the previous page, Daisuke’s teaching Kuro calligraphy, which means he’s close behind her holding her hand while she blushes slightly, which means Rin gets jealous and writes this.
Oh, and in case you’re reading this and wondering “you must be a lolicon yourself, no wonder you’re defending it”: no. The whole idea of limiting yourself or obsessing over a single fetish while watching anime or reading manga has never appealed to me, it’s like being at a buffet and being vegan, if you get my drift. Not like I watched ever anything for fetish’s sake anyway.

It looks great. Maybe I’ll read it. But after Bokurano ep 7, the idea of a teacher and student loli scares me a bit. Just a bit.

Definitely looking forward to this one. You of all people should know that.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one a bit pissed at Mr. Answerman for his rant against Kodomo no Jikan ;)

I did read the first couple of chapters of Nymphet as well, and I think the key is to get past the pandering that’s there, like getting past the pandering that is in Simoun, for another example. After a while, it just doesn’t matter much. :P

tj han: I tried looking up some of the kanji combinations and couldn’t find them in my Kodansha kanji dictionary, hope your vocab’s large. Lack of furigana sucks, Mimi Usuke/Kuro Kagami were rough guesses at their names. But it’s mostly anime vocab anyway.
Hemisphere: Strangely enough I wasn’t thinking of you at all, OSHI-
Matthew: Yeah, sad how he’s not exactly professional.
TheBigN: Rin was starting to look kind of moe at one point, but I quickly went to play a few rounds of Touhou when that happened.

BTW, the talkback thread coming from the Hey Answerman article is here. Interesting stuff on how Zac sees things, as well as a lot of talking past each other. :P

Personally, I’ve never read KnJ, though I intend to pick up the first volume, so I can’t really say anything about the content. But my opinion of Answerman becomes lower each time I read his column. For a guy answering obscure questions about anime, he comes off as more of an otaku hater, where any deep level of fan expression is an immediate crime. Apparently enjoying any kind of moe or fetishy anime is a sin in his eyes. That must really limit his viewing these days. Needless to say, I’m not much impressed with him and don’t give an ear to whatever he has to say.

I bitched about it too (i dunno how to make links, so http://2dcomplex.com/wordpress/?p=181) , but i mixed it in with talking shit about all of ANN for more time consuming magickz, i was bored. But he’s at the very bottom cuz i had the most to bitch about with him.

I have to admit, a lot of times I feel Zac is too harsh on many things.
But things like Kodomo no Jikan still creeps me out/disturbs me.
Maybe it’s because I’m just a highschool girl, and of course I’m not the intended audience.
I try to be accepting things around me, but lolicon is one that’s difficult for me to swallow.

TheBigN:
Ouch. I lasted till page 5. I think I’d lose less braincells through sticking two sharpies up my nostrils and inhaling deeply than reading the whole thing. Is there really anything worth reading in that mess of fan opinions? Link?I managed to finish reading the thread, this part where Zac tries to justify what he said is beyond retarded, it’s the realm of no return.
The whole associating of lolicon with the paedophile crowd is stupid, and people who make those kind of statements are dumb, but you knew that already. I also like how they brought up Nabokov’s Lolita and then completely missed the point. That book wasn’t exactly accepted outright in its time, we’re having the same thing here only it’s drawn, and instead of the older guy being the predator this time, it’s the younger girl? Oh, but Mr Answerman hasn’t even read it, but he says so, so it must be true!
Demian: He’s like the cousin of John (of Ask John fame) who was shaken as a baby and then dropped. Twice. He’s saying what a lot of people want to hear, sometimes I can’t tell if he actually has an opinion or if he’s just your typical hack that got lucky.
Either that or he just wants people to take him seriously because he’s not taking his job seriously. A grown man, having a job watching anime and manga? Obviously, to be cool he’s got to, y’know, act a bit more detached from it all. I don’t really think highly of him in any case, he’s interesting like Paris Hilton is interesting.
Tallon: Got it.
shirokryuu: I find shotacon and yaoi sick. I don’t blame you.

I couldnt help myself and ended up reading the past few newest pages. I bitche some more here, http://2dcomplex.com/wordpress/?p=184 . Sorry if you feel like im just plugging my blog, but id rather not respond with a giant rant of nothing, i think that’d be worse x.x
Anyway, Its really annoying, and as you said they miss all the valid points (like yours about Lolita), and/or in my case just completely dont let you post your opinion at all. In the end, he just repeats himself in new words each time about how KnJ is completely disgusting filth.
I think we both pointed it out as well about, “Obviously, to be cool hes got to, yknow, act a bit more detached from it all.”. All in all, just about all the Answerman articles are full of ‘i dont know wtf im talking about’ and ‘im trying to be cool’, he starts so many (loli mainly) debates just to cause a big stir of attention for himself. Hell, his column probably gets 5-10 times as much views during these times (thus ANN would see him as ‘doing his job well’) because of people like me who never read it usually but hear about this kind of thing and have to look. So i guess he’s good at sly marketing strategies but his opinion on anything else is pretty much null.

I LIKE THIS BOOK SINCE BOOK 1!! although i borrowed book 1 and 2 from my fren, i bought bk 3 on my own. and i’m loving every single moment of it. mainly because i’m a loli!! but hack that loli part and hack what people say about how this book is more gay than yaoi porn, it’s a fact in life. it’s happening in everyday life in japan.. *maybe Answerman is Gay himself/herself!!! can’t wait for the anime to be release.
“and last but not least a 20-something single guy whos Rins guardian.” Could that be her father? like in the case of asatte no houkou.
and the style of drawing is somehow similar to “He is my Master” style drawings. So, it’s quite possible to place Rin in the meido costume!!! :3

I intend to write my first ever article on my website about this series.
